Caught on Video: Elderly Driver Runs Red Light

By: Sharon Aron Baron

Anyone that drives along Commercial Boulevard east of University Drive knows that accidents are almost a weekly occurrence.  For those that live in the area, it only seems to be getting worse as more communities are being developed, bringing more drivers to our streets.

On Thursday morning, I witnessed a driver run a red light on Commercial Boulevard in front of Woodlands Boulevard almost hitting a two cars making adjacent left hand turns.  This wasn’t just someone who blew through a yellow light, this was someone who literally missed the light altogether because it was some time before he barreled through the intersection.

My mom, sister and daughter were all in the car as well, and thankfully were not in that lane. I caught up with the driver, who was at least in his 80’s or 90’s, who at first refused to roll down his window.  After awhile, he did roll it down and said, “I made a mistake.”

This was a huge mistake which could have resulted in someone losing their lives.

Suggestion: A refresher/driver self awareness program aimed at senior drivers 80ish & up, voluntary- to reevaluate their driver skills: perception; reaction time; Etc Etc — to consider cutting down driving time, or screening themselves out altogether. This would be beyond the senior defensive driving class many take to reduce insurance premiums. The class may include information regarding alternate means of transportation , including tech training in the use of the Uber or Lyft apps on their smartphones.

Personally, I know of 2 Tamarac families where their 85+ drivers became convinced to never drive again the day after each were responsible for non fatal accidents that totaled their autos and resulted in injury. They survived and are now fine, but won’t dare hit the road again. If they were given a chance to self evaluate and screen themselves out earlier, those accidents could have been prevented.

It would be a form of discrimination, every study shows that “ELDERLY drivers” drive just fine, if this should become mandatory it would be an extra expense on both taxpayers and on our Seniors.
Of course the main issue isn’t the expense, it is that people claim certain ethnic groups are poor drivers and that teens are poor drivers. Saving a life would be worth almost any expense.
We are overrun by rules, laws, and mandatory this & that, thank goodness the AARP supports not overtesting seniors based on little to no actual evidence.

In response to my friend Linia, my suggestion above would be strictly voluntary as written in my first sentence. I’m hypothesizing that some seniors , ( failing eyesight, etc) might be amenable to self evaluation and self screening out, and would weigh potential self destruction against loss of independence . In General I believe teens and adults alike with diagnosed or undiagnosed ADHD are likely to be the most aggressive impulsive drivers on the road without regard to ethnicity or age.
