Abandoned French Bulldog Finds Safe Haven Thanks to Tamarac Firefighters, Local Rescue

A French bulldog abandoned at a Tamarac fire station has been given a second chance after firefighters teamed up with a South Florida nonprofit to rescue him the same day.

According to Tamarac Mayor Michelle J. Gomez, the dog was dropped off Tuesday, Aug. 5, at Tamarac Fire Rescue Station 36 by a couple who said they were moving into a hotel and could no longer keep him.

The couple reportedly appeared unconcerned about the dog’s welfare. When firefighters asked whether the dog was healthy, vaccinated, or neutered, they either answered no or said they were unsure, according to Gomez.

After firefighters were unable to find an immediate placement, Tamarac firefighter Bethany Lefler of Station 78 was contacted because of her involvement with Groovy4Good, a nonprofit that supports local animal rescue organizations throughout South Florida.

Lefler reached out to Groovy4Good Founder and President Rachael Chirichello, who quickly contacted rescue partner UFAR Animals Rescue in Margate. The organization agreed to take the dog in that evening.

The French bulldog, now named Blaze, will receive veterinary care and vaccinations, and will be neutered before being placed for adoption.

Groovy4Good requested the name Blaze in honor of the Tamarac firefighters whose efforts helped ensure the dog was rescued and placed in a safe environment.

Mayor Gomez praised the firefighters and rescue organizations for working together to protect the abandoned dog and help him find a future forever home.

She also noted that French bulldogs are among the breeds most frequently surrendered or abandoned due to irresponsible breeding, their popularity as a fad breed, and the often significant medical issues and costs associated with their care.
