2020 is off to a great start with opportunities and growth coming to our community.
In January, I was excited to support the Coral Springs Martin Luther King Junior Scholarship program. This program awards scholarships to high school seniors with a financial need who would like to attend college.
To be eligible, students must attend one of the five high schools that serve Coral Springs. Funds are available on a one-time, nonrenewable basis. For more information, please visit coralsprings.org. The deadline to apply is March 9, 2020. This is a great way to honor MLK’s legacy by expanding the opportunities of all students.
Spirit Airlines broke ground on a new $250 million-dollar corporate facility in Broward County. The new campus will have everything from state-of-the-art flight simulators, training centers, and corporate office space. Spirit currently has 1000 employees in Broward County and will add over 200 more positions through the expansion. Spirit’s presence is reaching new heights in Broward County and will add to the continued focus of the airline on Broward County.
Part of my job as a County Commissioner is to be continually learning so I can best serve the residents of District 3. I recently had the opportunity to visit the Broward County Environmental Monitoring Lab. The range of capabilities that the lab and its staff have been incredible. They examine everything from the effects of algae blooms on our waterways, the impact of climate change on our coral reefs, to potential contamination of our water and soil.
In addition, Broward County’s lab teaches students from our local schools about different scientific procedures through hands-on involvement in day-to-day projects. The scientists at this facility are dedicated to serving the public and protecting our environment.
Finally, February is an especially difficult month for our community as we commemorate the tragedy at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. Whether you say a prayer, attend an event, or are someone affected, we as a community are all here to support each other during this challenging time of the year.
As we continue to heal, we remember those that were lost, help those suffering from injuries seen and unseen, and strive to create a safe environment for every member of our community.
