“Operation Homefront” at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport is a simulation that allows stakeholders such as Broward County Emergency Management, Law Enforcement, and others to participate and test guidelines in the event of an active shooter situation. I was able to observe this exercise firsthand and saw all aspects were simulated from communications to law enforcement response and triage of victims. This drill goes above and beyond FAA guidelines keeping FLL prepared to protect the traveling public.
In January, I look forward to attending the many events honoring Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Students from high schools and middle schools throughout District 3 will participate in “Diversity Day” on January 21, in Northwest Broward. “Diversity Day” is a day of service and learning for kids from the local community. Students will volunteer with several community organizations and hear from many speakers about the importance of diversity. It truly is “A day on, not a day off.”
Caring for our environment is a responsibility that we all share. I am always interested in learning about what Broward County is doing behind the scenes to protect and study our environment. This month I look forward to visiting Broward County’s Environmental Monitoring Lab, which recently partnered with the University of Miami to study our precious coral reefs. The lab also studies algae blooms, fish kills, coastal water monitoring, environmental compliance, and air quality monitoring.
I look forward to visiting and seeing the progress we are making towards these goals. In addition, I will be visiting one of Broward County’s aquatic plant harvesters that reduce the influences of invasive plants on our canals in District 3. This vessel also serves to clean up pollution in the water and helps our local environment.
Assisting the men and women who have served our country and our community is paramount to Broward County. The Broward County Veterans Services team, who are all veterans themselves, work hard to connect veterans with the services they have earned. Last year, this diligent department helped to distribute $12 million in veterans benefits to nearly 12,000 Broward veterans and their families. Broward County is home to over 100,000 veterans, and it is the utmost importance that they get every benefit they deserve. I am very proud to support the Veterans Services team and the incredibly important work they do.
