Biking enthusiasts that have physical disabilities now have the first new adaptive mountain bike trail in the country located here in Broward County.
The new trail, located in Markham Park in Sunrise, is now open seven days a week from 8:00 a.m. through 7:30 p.m.
Inspired by Falco Clark of Pembroke Pines who lost both legs three years ago in an industrial accident, volunteers from the Markham Park Trail Building Fund designed and built four miles of adaptive trails for recumbent bikes.
The grand opening was held on January 24, and included Broward County Commissioner Martin Kiar.
“What’s incredible to me is that one person can truly make a difference,” said Kiar. “Because of his advocacy, because of what he did, because of the community coming together and building this, we’re going to have thousands of folks who will want to enjoy our trails now.”
Markham Park is only 16 miles from the center of Tamarac. The cost is $25 for an annual pass, $5 for a daily pass, plus park admission on weekends and holidays. All riders must complete onetime registration. Helmets are required. Riders younger than 17 must have written consent from a parent or guardian.
