The holiday season has passed, and a New Year has begun! District 3 cities had successful community events parades, and helped many of those in need throughout our community to have a bright and joyous holiday season.

As we get ready for 2024, Broward County has exciting initiatives that will make for a successful new year.

In December, Port Everglades added brand new ship-to-shore container gantry cranes. This addition is a part of the $471 million port deepening and widening project. These cranes will bring efficiency, speed, and safety as our port doubles its capacity to 6 cranes that can accommodate cargo from Super Post Panamax Vessels.

The additional cargo capacity is not only a win for our port, but the local economy as goods will be able to enter and leave the port quicker. The increased positions will also mean more ships can come and go on a daily basis. Port Everglades is already a Top 5 Port in North America, and with these new additions, Port Director Daniels is aiming to get our port to #1 soon!

The Broward County Convention Center hotel is well on its way to becoming a reality. In December, I attended the “Topping Out Ceremony” for the brand-new Omni Hotel, which will be on-site at the convention center. The 800-room connected hotel will enhance the convention experience by providing on-site accommodations for guests and expanding the capabilities of the 1.2 million square foot center.

This will increase our ability to host larger conventions and events that will have a significant economic impact on our local communities for years to come. I am looking forward to the grand opening and the future success of this wonderful addition to Broward County!

In January, I will attend the annual Broward Days events that will showcase our county priorities to members of the Florida Legislature from across the state. Broward Days allows our local leaders and organizations to meet with the state’s leadership and advocate for state-funded programs that are essential to the residents of Broward County.

I look forward to working with Broward’s Intergovernmental Affairs team and our state representatives and senators as we bring Broward’s voice to Tallahassee.

Every year, I look forward to celebrating the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. with our community. I encourage you to not just take the day off but dedicate a day of service to help others. We must all work together and commit to improving the common good every day so we can continue to make positive impacts and thrive as a community.
