On Christmas Eve, deputies at the Broward Sheriff’s Office in North Lauderdale and Tamarac received a call about a vehicle that had left the roadway and driven into a canal.

When they arrived on the 6800 block of Southgate Blvd, they found the vehicle completely submerged in the water. Deputies S. Flynn, A. Ferraro, and C. Anca removed their duty gear and protective vests and entered the icy water to rescue the victim, according to a statement from North Lauderdale BSO,

The deputies swam approximately 25 yards to the middle of the canal, where they found the victim facedown and unresponsive. They brought her back to shore and began performing life-saving measures.

According to BSO, the victim had suffered self-inflicted wounds to her wrists and had attempted to take her own life by driving into the canal. Thanks to these deputies’ quick thinking and bravery, the victim became responsive and was taken to the hospital for treatment.

“These deputies are true heroes,” according to the statement. “They selflessly placed their own well-being aside to save a person they had never met; their actions demonstrate the dedication and bravery of law enforcement officers, who often put their lives on the line to protect and serve the community.”
