Deputies shot and killed a patient after he threatened to harm others with a weapon at the University Hospital and Medical Center Behavioral Health Pavilion in Tamarac.
At approximately 10:30 p.m. on Saturday, staff from the center contacted the Broward Sheriff’s Office and requested help with a patient. They described him as violent and said he was threatening to harm other people with an edged-glass weapon.
When deputies arrived at the facility, located at 7425 N. University Dr., they encountered Jarvis Randall, 30, who was demonstrating aggressive threatening behavior. They tried to calm him down and de-escalate the violent situation. One deputy used his bean-bag service weapon to peacefully subdue Randall, but the less-lethal alternative did not stop him from charging at the deputies. Three other deputies fired their weapons.
Randall was transported to Broward Health North hospital by a BSO helicopter. He was pronounced dead shortly before midnight. No other injuries were reported.
Per BSO standard procedure, the three deputies have been placed on restricted assignment pending further investigation by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.
