It wasn’t a typical day in Tamarac, nor would it a be a typical first day on the job for newly sworn-in Sheriff Scott Israel after an elderly woman shot another then refused to comply with a Broward Sheriff’s Office Deputy’s orders to drop the weapon.
The deputy fired at least one shot, fatally wounding 60-year-old Linda Sue Davis.
On Wednesday morning in a quiet Tamarac neighborhood near Rock Island and Commercial at 4714 N.W. 44 St., authorities say the victim was shot inside the house shortly after 10:35 a.m. But when the deputy arrived, he found her face-down in the driveway with Davis still inside. Davis came out holding a handgun. The deputy ordered her to put it down, but she continued to advance toward him and raised the gun, forcing him to fire.
Israel was in the process of swearing in BSO Homicide detectives when they rushed out to investigate the scene to determine what led Davis to kill her victim.
BSO’s Tamarac district deputies are familiar with Davis. They responded to her home 79 times since March 2008 for various reasons categorized as suspicious incidents, a mentally ill person, medical calls, information, breaking and entering and disturbances, among other things.
After a deputy-involved shooting, the officer was placed on administrative leave per BSO policy.
