Family Kitchen Ordered Closed After Roach Activity and 12 Health Violations

Family Kitchen in Tamarac was ordered to close after inspectors found roach activity, unsafe food temperatures, and 12 health violations.

Family Kitchen Restaurant and Catering, 3134 West Commercial Blvd., was ordered to close on August 18 after inspectors with the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation reported finding 12 violations.

Among the most serious findings was what inspectors described as live roach activity throughout several areas of the restaurant.

According to the inspection report, an inspector observed roaches near the front door in the dining room, between a wall and a reach-in cooler in the dry storage area, and on the floor and behind chest freezers in dry storage.

Inspectors also reported finding approximately live roaches beneath an oven in the kitchen and another underneath a reach-in cooler.

Dead roaches were also documented, including on an oven and inside a reach-in cooler in the kitchen.

The inspection also resulted in a stop-sale order on multiple food items that inspectors said had been held overnight at temperatures above the required 41 degrees.

Among the items cited were cooked pork, cooked beans and raw chicken wings at 59 degrees; cooked gravy at 60 degrees; and raw turkey wings at 65 degrees.

Other refrigerated items found above safe temperatures included cooked chicken, pork, turkey, and goat. Inspectors also found pickles stored at the front counter at 80 degrees.

Another violation involved the restaurant’s dishwashing setup. Inspectors reported that the establishment had no dishwashing setup, including no three-compartment sink or warewashing machine.

The restaurant was ordered closed. Temporary closures generally remain in effect until inspectors determine that conditions requiring the shutdown have been corrected.
