Once a star in high school plays at J.P. Taravella High School, the acting bug never seemed to have left Sharyn Peoples.
This month, she is starring in the regional premiere of the musical Island Song with Measure for Measure Theatre.
With a kinetic pop-rock score by Sam Carner and Derek Gregor, this poignant, off-beat “dramedy” follows five 20- and 30-somethings as they take on New York City over a year. These young hopefuls must work through their complex relationships with ambition, distraction, and the desire to connect.
Peoples’ character, Jordan Cutter, is a world-beating corporate attorney working at a New York law firm.
Like Jordan, Peoples is a go-getting career woman.
After graduating high school in 1993, she studied theater at Florida State University and Florida Atlantic University, where she received her bachelor’s of fine arts.
She has owned and operated Peoples Title of South Florida since 2003, and is a licensed mortgage loan originator. Just like her character, Peoples triumphantly takes on the challenge of working in a relatively male-dominated industry.
Peoples still manages to balance her careers in both theater and real estate while raising a family. She and her husband, Silas Escalante, have been married for two years and live in Deerfield Beach. Together, they are raising Escalante’s 11-year-old son — also named Silas.
She said her husband has always been supportive of her passion and her demanding career.
“He takes up a lot of the slack when I am in rehearsals and performances — and always with a smile on.”
Be sure to see Peoples in the regional premiere of Island Song, running from Thursday, March 12 through Sunday, March 29, at the Sunrise Civic Center.
Showtimes are Thursday-Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. Tickets are $38 with discount tickets available for students, military personnel, industry professionals and City of Sunrise residents. This production contains sexual content and may not be appropriate for children.
