Amid statewide arts funding cuts, local artist and expressive therapies teacher Susan Buzzi has secured a Broward County Cultural Division Individual Artist Grant to bring her unique “Creative Wellness” project to the community.
The initiative, set to debut in November, aims to celebrate creativity, mindfulness, and wellness through an interactive workshop, a gallery exhibit, and a short film.
Despite recent funding cuts in the arts across the state, Susan Buzzi of Tamarac received an Individual Artist grant from Broward County Cultural Division to present ‘Creative Wellness,’ which will consist of a workshop, an exhibit, and a short film,” reads the statement from the event organizers.
The month-long celebration starts with a community workshop at the Tamarac Community Center on November 4 from 3:30 to 5 p.m.
Open to all ages, the workshop will focus on mindfulness, gratitude, and creativity. Buzzi will guide participants through various art activities such as collage-making, word art, mandala design, and coloring. Buzzi will be joined by collaborator Dr. Jeff Pickens for a brief lecture, setting the tone for the following hands-on activities. The best part? No registration is required, encouraging community members to participate in self-expression.
The workshop is especially timely as November marks Stress Awareness Month, Self-Care Month, and Early Childhood Mental Health Awareness Month.
“As a teacher of expressive therapies, with November being Early Childhood Mental Health Awareness Month, I believe it is most timely to bring it to the community,” Buzzi, a 15-year Tamarac resident, shared.
An exhibition showcasing the artworks created during the workshop and select photographs featuring Buzzi’s inspiring quotes will open on November 23 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Tamarac Community Center. The exhibit, running through December 31, will also feature works by some of Buzzi’s students from Atlantis Academy in Coral Springs, where she teaches expressive therapies.
