Welcome to June! We have some fantastic events this month to kick off the summer season, and I can’t wait to celebrate them with you.
The Tamarac Parks & Recreation Family Re’Union series continues this month with a Family Bowling Night on Friday, June 9th, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Bowlero bowling alley at 8501 N. University Dr. To register, visit www.tamarac.me/event or call (954) 597-3620.
Move with the Mayor continues this month with a free indoor Jazzercise class on Saturday, June 10th at 11:00 a.m. led by Instructor Warren at the Tamarac Recreation Center, 7531 N. University Dr. Please mark your calendars for next month’s Zumba class with Instructor Maria on Friday, July 14th, at 6:00 p.m. at the Tamarac Community Center, 8601 W. Commercial Blvd.
Please join us for our Juneteenth Celebration on Friday, June 16th, from 7:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at the Tamarac Sports Complex. There’ll be a fantastic mix of artists and performers, including Ashanti Cultural Arts and music by Motown Magic, vendors, food trucks, and a kid’s zone with inflatables and face painting for the young ones to enjoy. Don’t forget to bring your lawn chairs to kick back and enjoy the music.
Cool off from the summer sun at this month’s Dive-In Movie event featuring “Finding Nemo” on Friday, June 23rd, at the Caporella Aquatics Complex, 9300 NW 58th St. The event begins at 7:30 p.m., and the movie starts at 8:30 p.m. sharp. There’ll be pre-movie games, arts & crafts, and giveaways for the family to enjoy, so be sure to stop by. The cost is $5 per guest. If you or someone you know was affected by the flooding during April’s weather emergency, there is now a FEMA Disaster Recovery Center in Fort Lauderdale. Residents and business owners who sustained flood losses can apply for disaster assistance or get questions answered at their Hortt Park location at 1700 SW 14th Ct., Fort Lauderdale, FL 33312. The center is open from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Residents can visit the center to learn about disaster assistance programs, check the status of their FEMA application, and more.
Local Reminders
Food distributions continue every Saturday from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m., or while supplies last, at the Korean United Methodist Church, 6501 W. Commercial Blvd.
Get local fresh produce, delicious bites, pet treats, artisanal goodies, and more at the Tamarac Community Farmer’s Market. It’s currently being held at Tamarac Park, 7501 N. University Dr., from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. every Sunday.
The City of Tamarac is hosting a Circle of Support group every Monday, 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., at the Tamarac Community Center. This group is led by a licensed mental health therapist and is open to all. Guests will learn strategies to cope with life changes. For more information, please call 954-597-3642.
Don’t miss Food Truck Fridays every last Friday of the month between 5:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. at the Tamarac Community Center, 8601 W. Commercial Blvd. Stop by with the family and choose from various delicious food vendors. There’ll be lots of fun, music, and games for everyone to enjoy!
The Tamarac Pet Pantry has donations available for pet families in need! The Pantry is located at the Tamarac Recreation Center, 7501 North University Dr., and is open by appointment on the 2nd and 4th Tuesday and Thursday of each month. The first appointment is at 1:00 p.m., and the last is at 6:00 p.m. We accept new and unopened food products for dogs and cats if the food isn’t expired. Safety Reminders
Do you have a family password? With the rise in senior scams and security concerns, many families are implementing family passwords as a security measure to protect themselves. By creating a family password, or codeword that only you and anyone you trust knows, you can protect yourself and your loved ones from anyone who might try to harm or defraud you or your family.
A family code word could safeguard you from phone scams and other fraudulent situations where individuals impersonate family members. Code words can also be used to pass on instructions in an emergency. Speak with your family about establishing a family code word and get peace of mind that you and your loved ones are protected.
June 1st marks the beginning of Hurricane season. The preseason forecast predicts an unusually active period with 19 storms, nine hurricanes, and four major hurricanes. Our best defense is to be prepared. I’ve mentioned this before, but it’s worth repeating the following,
Tamarac Fire Rescue (TFR) has partnered with the Red Cross to provide residents with smoke and carbon monoxide alarms where needed. Residents who need assistance installing smoke and carbon monoxide alarms or replacing the alarm batteries (supplied by the resident) can call (954) 597-3800 to get placed on an installation schedule.
