The school season kicks off this month with Broward students returning virtually on August 19th for the first half of the 2020-2021 school year. In preparation, families can take advantage of Florida’s Tax-Free Weekend, which begins on Friday, August 7th and runs until Sunday, August 9th. During the holiday, shoppers can purchase qualifying school supplies, clothing, footwear, and accessories tax-free. To further assist families in need, the City of Tamarac will host a drive-thru backpack and school supplies distribution. It will take place on August 11th, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the Tamarac Community Center, located at 8601 W. Commercial Blvd. The event is open to Tamarac residents only. Those interested must call (954) 597-3626 by August 7th to pre-register. This month, the City of Tamarac will also launch its Neighborhood Partnership Program (NPP), offering eligible candidates the opportunity to upgrade nearby landscaping, signage, lighting, and more. Food distribution will continue Saturdays at the Korean United Methodist Church located at 6501 W. Commercial Blvd. from 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., or while supplies last. They will also take place at the Christian Life Center located at 2699 West Commercial Blvd. from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, August 5th and 12th, and the Community Christian Church, located at 10001 W. Commercial Blvd from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., on Monday, August 17th. Those that cannot attend a food drive can call Feeding South Florida at (954) 518-1818.
