On Sunday, Democratic candidate for State House, Jared Moskowitz, held his long-anticipated kickoff event at the Woodmont Country Club with a breakfast attended by hundreds of supporters.
While most campaigns are well underway, Moskowitz held his event after his Republican opponents have been campaigning all year.
Currently, there are two Republicans running for District 97 that will be in the August 14 primary. The winner of that, will face Moscowitz in November.
Moscowitz will be running in Florida District 97 which covers Coral Springs, Tamarac, parts of Sunrise and Plantation. This seat is currently occupied by Ari Porth, Democrat, who cannot run again because of term limits. However, he recently won his election for Circuit Court, Group 10 unopposed.
Moscowitz, has the support of Democrats in his district but wants the support of Republicans as well. “I think fiscal Republicans will see we have a lot in common. They will see we agree in many areas on the business and fiscal side as well as supporting local business.”
As a State Representative, Moscowitz wants to keep taxes low and keep business competitive. “Companies should want to open business here.” He also believes our state is wasting money suing the Federal Government. “I don’t think this is how you get Florida on track,” he said.
Moskowitz, 31, is currently serving as a Commissioner in Parkland and has been since 2006 when at the age of 25 he was one of the youngest elected official in the state at that time.
While he was the Parkland Vice Mayor from 2006 through 2008, Moskowitz wrote the Parkland Energy Incentive Reward Program. Through this program, the City of Parkland refunds tax dollars to residents if they participate in several green initiatives.
Moskowitz also co-authored an ordinance requiring all commercial shopping centers to convert parking lot lighting to solar power within 10 years. In addition, he sponsored single stream recycling in Parkland and the retrofitting of Parkland City Hall with solar panels. Because of his leadership on environmental issues, Moskowitz was appointed by the Broward League of Cities to the Broward County Climate Change Task Force where he currently serves as Vice Chair.
Moskowitz was one of the first elected officials in the nation to lead on the issue of Chinese dry wall. He helped create a task force to investigate and collate documents and statistics to send to members of Congress. His most recent endeavor was writing and sponsoring an ordinance restricting texting while driving in the city of Parkland.
Despite the rain, Moskowitz and his campaign team brought in over 250 supporters, many from Kingspoint in Tamarac, as well as Broward County Commissioner Stacy Ritter who introduced him.
