More than 5,000 Tamarac property owners required to carry flood insurance will continue to receive a 20 percent discount.
This is due to the Class 6 rating the City of Tamarac has held by the National Flood Insurance Program’s Community Rating System (CRS) since 2011.
Each year the city publishes an annual progress report describing its flood plain management available on www.Tamarac.org.
In it, residents will learn that the city maintains 533 acres of open waterway, 82 miles of drainage pipes 4,669 catch basins, approximately 137 miles of paved roadway, and three stormwater pump stations.
A Citywide Culvert and Headwall Improvement Project and the Southgate Boulevard Drainage Improvement Project are two of the projects highlighted in this year’s report.
In the Culvert and Headwall project, they will pre-treat stormwater within the city’s canal network before its discharge into the C-14 canal. This removes or reduces harmful pollutants and minerals before stormwater enters a primary or secondary water body.
Statistics show that all homes have a 26 percent chance of experiencing a flood during the life of a 30-year mortgage – whether they’re in a flood zone or not.
This is why the city encourages residents and businesses to learn about flood hazards and protections and to carry flood insurance, even if they aren’t required to do so. Properties outside the flood zones are eligible for lower-cost preferred risk policies.
