A pedestrian was struck and killed by a teenage driver in Tamarac on Tuesday, authorities said.

Broward Sheriff’s Office Traffic Homicide Unit detectives said they are investigating the death of Jeanne Jean, 67, of Lauderhill, who was hit by a 2012 Mazda 6—driven by a 19-year-old Coral Springs man—shortly before 8:30 a.m.

The deadly crash happened near the McDonald’s parking lot entrance at 7600 West Commercial Boulevard.

A preliminary investigation revealed that Jean had just exited a city bus and was walking east on the sidewalk approaching the McDonald’s parking lot as the Mazda’s driver, Nicholas Melgar, drove south through the lot, authorities said.

Melgar stopped at a stop sign to make a right turn onto West Commercial Boulevard, according to BSO. Detectives said Jean was directly in front of the Mazda when it began to move forward, pushing her to the ground.

Melgar initially left the crash scene but returned shortly after and cooperated with investigators, the sheriff’s office said.

BSO deputies and Tamarac Fire Rescue responded to the scene. Paramedics transported Jean to Broward Health Medical Center, where doctors pronounced her dead

The investigation is ongoing, according to BSO.
