One Tamarac community holds a mystery where the body of a headless, tailless alligator was discovered in the canal behind a home.
David Corito, found the alligator this past week on Westwood Blvd and 66th Street and called the City of Tamarac where workers removed the carcass and informed Corito that they had just removed another one last week.
“In all the years living here, we never encountered anything like this,” said Corito.
No one knows who is killing the alligators and leaving their bodies in the canals.
Alligator tail meat is low in calories and fat and is considered a delicacy to some. According to Michael Brothers who studied at the Culinary Institute of America, the tail is about 80 percent of the usable meat from the alligator. “…It wouldn’t surprise me to hear some sick and sadistic person cut off their tail and leave them to die, however, the head has no real usable meat. My only guess would be that someone is cutting them off for “trophies” which is just as sick on my opinion.”
Brothers said that he hoped that police are able to find whoever is perpetrating these egregious acts.
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission is strict about killing alligators from the wild, and those that do must have three different licenses to trap, farm and process them.
