Residents West of the Turnpike May Not Need Flood Insurance

By: Sharon Aron Baron

After years of waiting, thousands of property owners west of the Turnpike may get relief from costly annual flood insurance bills.

The Sun Sentinel reported today that FEMA, sent letters notifying counties and cities that it had finished a three-year study of Broward’s flood zones removing 265,781 Broward parcels from the flood plains, according to county estimates. A contractor is reviewing the maps for accuracy and a FEMA staffer said they will be released in the months ahead.

Not everyone is off scot-free, some lenders may still require flood insurance even if a property is outside the flood zone.
