Rob’s Bageland: Why I Love Good Jewish Food – NOT New York Style Food

By: Dan I Cook

First off,  the New York Jets suck!

The reason why I started my review that way is because I’m not a fan New York Style food. I’ve never been to New York City and I’ve never tried the food. As a native of Broward County, to hear former New Yorkers say how great everything is up there, I don’t care! My only real experience with New York are the fans for the Jets. The majority of them are obnoxious and a big pain in the ass. So there’s my rant on New York.

Now onto my review.

I recently stopped by the Wiles Road location of Rob’s Bageland to pick up a couple dozen bagels and two pounds of cream cheese. I needed this for a tailgate brunch I did for a recent FAU football game – where we won by the way #owlsup. I’ve eaten at this location before for breakfast only and the location in Tamarac dozens of times and I’ve always had a pleasant experience. I just love the bagels and cream cheese here.

About Rob’s

Rob’s Bageland has been family-owned by Parkland resident Rob Elbaum for 27 years. The first location on Wiles Road in Coral Springs was purchased in 2003 and Rob then became the hands-on owner. In 2007, the second location was opened in Plantation with his wife Alicia, who has been with Bageland for over 30 years. In 2008, they opened their third store in Tamarac, which has become a huge success for them. Just this past May, they purchased their fourth location on Lakeview and Coral Ridge Drive in Coral Springs. This location has been totally renovated.

Bageland has had the same employees for over two decades. Chef Moise Jeannot does most of the cooking for the two Coral Springs stores as well as the Tamarac store. He makes all the soups, corned beef, brisket, stuffed cabbage and knishes from scratch. Samantha Gerstl, Alicia’s daughter manages the new Lakeview location and has been with the company for four years. David Lesser runs the Tamarac location and has been with Bageland for six years.

Food

Besides the awesome homemade bagels and different types of cream cheese, I really enjoy their Nova sandwich. The portion is a nice size and I just love all the elements to this thing: nice toasted garlic bagel, spread the cream cheese on the bagel, layered the Nova, sprinkle some salt and pepper, then layer on the tomato, green pepper, cucumber, carrot, then the red onion.  There is no fishy taste, and the addition of the salt and pepper, made this thing pop with flavor.  I rank this Nova sandwich in my top two out in Northwest Broward. I think the portions are big for the price. I’ve heard some people complain about the prices, but I think they are reasonable.

Religion

I have to laugh when I see “New York Style Bagels”. Man this is straight up Jewish food and there is nothing wrong with that.  Now I’m not Jewish – as a matter a fact I’m a spiritual guy with no affiliation attached to me, however, I love a solid Jewish Deli. Nobody can make bagels like the Jews. Forget about NYC, Dunkin Donuts, Einstein’s, and Offerdahl’s, you may try to make a great bagel, but it’s not the same. This place is not religious so don’t think that, it’s just great to be Jewish even if it’s only while I’m eating breakfast or buying bagels here.

Service and Ambiance

The service is always good here and your coffee mug never gets empty because they come around so often to refill it. I love that. Food comes out quick and hot.

About the decor, I have written on Yelp that then inside of the restaurant needs some remodeling. Since then, I’ve changed my mind on this issue. Does the place look dated? Yes. Do I come here for the decor? No. Do I think they should remodel? No. Why? In a crazy way, the decor adds to the charm of this joint. It’s far from fancy, there are no booths, it’s just a hardcore Jewish Deli. It’s kept clean, and that’s all I ask for.

Verdict

Hands down some of the the best bagels and Nova Sandwich in the northwest part of Broward County. Remember to tell them Dan and Coral Springs Talk sent you and Stay Hungry!
