On March 8th, Broward Sheriff’s Office held a Shred-A-Thon and Operation Medicine Cabinet prescription drug take back event in Kings Point in Tamarac where 502 cars lined up to take part, beating last years record of 478.
In total 19,000 pounds of documents were shredded.
Residents in Tamarac not only brought their documents to be safely shredded but they received a $5 gift card from Publix for unused or expired prescription medication. According to Jonathon Fishman of the Community Affairs Division, 276 Gift Cards were given out and over 24,000 non-controlled pills were collected, including 4,066 controlled units, which included the drugs Oxycodone and Hydrocodone.
Sheriff Scott Israel came by and said hello along with Tamarac’s newly appointed Captain Neal Glassman who was on hand to meet residents.
The Shred-A-Thon provides residents with a safe way to dispose of their personal documents, check stubs, credit card offers, receipts and any other paperwork that contains sensitive information. The service is free of charge. There’s a limit of five boxes per person. The Shred-A-Thon events began in Broward County in May 2008, as a joint initiative by the Broward Sheriff’s Office and the Florida Attorney General’s Office, with the assistance of UNISHRED and The National Association of TRIADS.
