The Broward County Sheriff’s Office covers many cities including Tamarac but what many residents don’t realize is not only do we pay for them through our city taxes, but through our county taxes as well. If you fly, take a cruise, or have to visit the Broward County Courthouse, then you will encounter BSO and their many officers.
The head of BSO is Sheriff Al Lamberti who currently oversees a $650 million budget and 5,800 employees. Besides Tamarac, BSO covers the following areas: Central Broward, Cooper City, Court Services, Dania Beach, Deerfield Beach, Ft Lauderdale-Hollywood Int’l Airport, Lauderdale-By-The-Sea, Lauderdale Lakes, North Lauderdale, Oakland Park, Parkland, Pembroke Park, West Park, Pompano Beach, Port Everglades, Southwest Ranches, Weston and unincorporated West Broward.
This year he faces Scott Israel, the same opponent as he did in 2008. Although Israel runs as a Democrat, county election records show he was a registered Republican until 2007.

Career: Israel retired as police chief of North Bay Village in 2008 and spent 25 years in Fort Lauderdale Police Department. Up until 2011, he co-owned private investigation firm with a former Hollywood Assistant Police Chief and a Hollywood Police Chief.

For the past 30 years, Israel has continually advanced into positions of increased responsibility as a law enforcement leader. He spent the first 25 years of his career with the Fort Lauderdale Police Department, a Florida State Accredited and CALEA recognized agency, comprised of over 800 employees.
Israel retired with the rank of Captain/S.W.A.T. Commander, after being selected to become Chief of Police for the City of North Bay Village.??During his tenure with the Fort Lauderdale Police Department, Israel was assigned to the Police Department’s Community Policing Division, Operations Bureau, and Special Investigations Division. As a member of those Divisions, he constantly demonstrated a unique ability to develop and maintain cooperative working relations with groups and individuals.
As the Chief of Police of North Bay Village, he continued to foster strategic partnerships with the community, thereby enhancing the safety and well-being of our citizens. Israel was the recipient of the Dade County Police Benevolent Association 2005 “Police Chief of the Year.”??Israel’s substantial law-enforcement background includes significant senior command level experience as well as that of Police Chief in a South Florida community that enjoys an integrated mix of cultures, ages, races, and ethnic backgrounds. He is a skilled leader and an accomplished manager of resources.
Israel’s talent for inspiring teamwork among public safety personnel, citizen groups and community leaders, has allowed him to succeed in all areas of community policing including crime prevention, crime control, education and enforcement. He has a proven record as a fair and respected law enforcement leader and he is an ardent supporter of front-line personnel. In addition to possessing a B.A. Degree, Israel is a graduate of the FBI National Academy (212 Session).??It is for these reasons that Scott Israel is seeking the office of Broward County Sheriff.

Israel is the 2008 recipient of the “Brian Piccolo Coach of the Year” for his lifetime achievement in youth sports. “Coach Scott” has been the head coach of the Coral Springs Charger’s Tackle football team for the past 6 years. He has also coached football at Stoneman Douglas High School for the past 8 years. He currently coaches at North Broward Preparatory School.
Israel has been married to Susan Galla Israel for 19 years and they are the parents of triplets, Brett, Blake and Blair.

Lamberti made headlines over the summer by becoming the first county wide Broward candidate that has gotten on the ballot by petition. The Supervisor of Elections certified the 10,418 petitions necessary for him to be placed on the November ballot by the voters.
“The actual amount of petitions signed were over 16,000”, stated Lamberti, “I am humbled by the support given to me during my first term in office,”
By getting petitions, Lamberti saved his campaign over $10,000 in filing fees.
Lamberti was born in New York, but has been a resident of Broward County for 35 years. Sheriff Lamberti attended Florida State University for two years (1972-1974). He holds an Associate in Science Degree in Law Enforcement from Palm Beach Community College, and a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Criminal Justice from Florida Atlantic University. Outside of law enforcement you can find Sheriff Lamberti on the baseball field as he was the youth baseball coach for 15 years. Following coaching, he became President of the Margate Youth Baseball League.
Sheriff Lamberti is a 33-year veteran of the Broward Sheriff’s Office. Beginning his career within the Department of Detention in 1977, he worked his way through the ranks, eventually serving as Captain in the Organized Crime Division, Chief in Deerfield Beach, Interim Police Chief for the City of Hollywood, Director of the Training and Organizational Development Division, Major where has assumed command of the South Patrol Region which includes Port Everglades and Fort Lauderdale/ Hollywood International Airport post- September 11th.
In 2009, Sheriff Lamberti was named Chairman of the Region 7 Gang Reduction Task Force by the Attorney General. He also serves on the Board of Directors to the prestigious National Sheriff’s Association.
Before joining the Broward Sheriff’s Office, Sheriff Lamberti served in the United States Coast Guard at various duty stations, primarily in Miami, Florida. He was assigned as a Special Agent in the Office of Intelligence and Law Enforcement, United States Coast Guard Reserve. Additionally, Sheriff Lamberti is a graduate of the 167th Session of the F.B.I. National Academy and served as President of the Florida Chapter of the F.B.I. National Academy Associates in 2004.
Sheriff Lamberti strongly believes in giving back to the community he serves. Thus, expanding community partnerships and initiatives between the Broward Sheriff’s Office and organizations such as the United Way Commission on Substance Abuse, Boys and Girls Clubs of Broward County, 100 Black Men of Fort Lauderdale, Broward CHAI Center, A Child is Missing, Broward Partnership for the Homeless, First Call for Help of Broward (211), American Cancer Society, Hispanic Unity, Pace Center for Girls, Women In Distress, YMCA of Broward County, and the Urban League of Broward County.
Lamberti is happily married to Holly for nearly 20 years where he has one son, Nicholas, and two stepchildren, Jamie and David.
