Celebrate Black History Month while learning more about Black history and culture through several events offered by the City of Tamarac’s Parks and Recreation Department.
In February, there are several live and virtual events for all ages. Register or sign-in on the links under each activity.
Friday, February 5
Movie in the Park “Black Panther”
Held at the Tamarac Sports Complex, 9901 NW 77th St. Gates open at 6:30 p.m. Pre-registration is required. The cost is $5 per space, which can accommodate up to six household members. Each registered space receives one free snack bag. Registration is at tamarac-movie-in-the-park.eventbrite.com.
Saturday, February 13
Story Walk Event Featuring “We All Belong” by Nathalie and Alex Goss
Held at Waters Edge Park, 7508 NW 61st St. The event begins at 10 a.m. Each child will receive a free book while supplies last. Also, Bianca Ukah and Kamiesha Anderson-Wieder, authors of the book “Binky the Mermaid: The Fin-Tastic Race,” will be at the event.
Friday, February 26
Black History Month Celebration: Speakers + Entertainment + Art
Held from 6:00 p.m. – 8:30 p.m., watch a virtual lecture by African American scholar and activist Dr. Marc Lamont Hill at the Tamarac Sports Complex, 9901 NW 77th St., which will be shared on a large screen.
Attendees will enjoy live poetry by Rebecca “Butterfly” Vaughn, performances by Delou African Dance Ensemble, and cultural art displays.
Black community leaders will also be honored. Masks and social distancing are required. Attendees must pre-register to reserve a 12 x 12-foot viewing space here at Tamarac-black-history-month-celebration-tickets.
Saturday, February 27
Quilting: A Historical Perspective Through Art
This is a virtual guided workshop held at 10 a.m. George Gadson, a world-renowned, South Florida-based artist, will guide participants through the creative process of crafting their own quilts while exploring the Black historical tradition of storytelling through quilting from the time of slavery to the present day.
The pre-registration link is quilting-a-historical-perspective-through-art.eventbrite.com. Supplies needed are white or black foam board, glue sticks, colored tissue paper, multi-colored construction paper, scissors, and old magazines (optional). Cost: $10 Proceeds will support United Way Broward.
