Welcome to May! It’s the perfect time for some fun in the sun. We have great outdoor concerts, music, and events for the whole family this spring!

Celebrate mom’s special day with us at our indoor Mother’s Day Picnic on Saturday, May 6, at Tamarac Park, 7501 N. University Dr. There’ll be food, drinks, music, raffles, gifts, and more for those in attendance. Bring your favorite picnic blanket and enjoy the festivities. Baskets will be gifted to attendees. Ready to tackle some spring cleaning? Be sure to mark your calendars for the Semi-Annual Community Hazardous Household Waste Recycling Event on Saturday, May 6, from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Tamarac Public Services Building, 6011 Nob Hill Road (East Entry Gate). Safely recycle electronics and hazardous household waste for free. We’ve also made drop-off easy for you with curbside service. Simply store the items in your trunk and remain in your vehicle while our staff retrieves the items with minimal contact. A photo ID is required. The next Movie in the Park features “Spiderman – No Way Home” on Friday, May 12, at the Tamarac Sports Complex, 9901 NW 77th St. Join us for kids’ activities beginning at 6:30 p.m. with inflatables, face-painting, food trucks, and a DJ. The movie starts at 8:00 p.m. sharp. Remember to bring your blankets and lawn chairs. Attendees will receive a free bag of popcorn while supplies last, so get there early!

As the beautiful weather draws many of us outdoors, it’s a perfect time to remember to practice water safety. You can improve your skills at the Parks and Recreation Department’s Operation Swim Water Safety Expo on Saturday, May 13. The free event will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Caporella Aquatic Center, 9300 NW 58th Street. Come for a morning of water activities, safety tips, swimming techniques, and survival basics. The information is truly vital for water lovers and could help save lives!

Thank you for joining me for Jazzercise last month! Our next Move with the Mayor event features a free 20/20/20 class at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 13, at the Tamarac Community Center, 8601 W. Commercial Blvd. You can also mark your calendars for next month’s free Jazzercise class at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 10th, led by Warren at the Tamarac Community Center. See you there!

Get ready to celebrate Tamarac’s 60th Anniversary at this year’s One Tamarac: Multicultural Festival from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 20th, at the Tamarac Sports Complex. One Tamarac showcases a variety of cultural performances and exhibitions and is a favorite among many residents and visitors. There’ll be fireworks, a children’s fun zone, food vendors with international delights to choose from, plus some extra surprises to mark this momentous occasion–you won’t want to miss it! Parking is limited. Continuous shuttle transportation will be available from 3:45 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Tamarac City Hall, 7525 NW 88th Ave.

The Chabad Jewish Center of Tamarac is hosting an evening of Courage, Resilience, and Music with the Holocaust Survivor Band on Monday, May 22, at 7:00 p.m. at the Tamarac Community Center. The event guest stars 98-year-old Holocaust survivor Saul Dreier who will be sharing his story, including how he rebuilt his life with the help of his music and band. You won’t want to miss out on this unique and uplifting experience. Advance RSVP is $18 for adults and free for children under 13, and admission at the door is $25 per adult and free for children under 13. Want to have some family fun with the kids? Then be sure to sign up for this month’s Family Feud Battle Games: Parents VS Kids edition on Saturday, May 27. The cost is $5 per adult and $3 per child and will take place from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Tamarac Park. Snacks and drinks will be provided for participants. Calling all artists! Tamarac resident Susan S. Buzzi received an Individual Artist Grant from Broward County Cultural Division to present “The Kindness Project.” The intergenerational and multi-disciplinary program promotes empathy, mindfulness, and wellness through art. Buzzi will collaborate with Dr. Jeffrey Pickens, Ph.D., professor of psychology, author, and human development expert, to facilitate a Community Workshop on May 11th, at 3:30 p.m. at Tamarac Community Center, consisting of a series of art-related activities open to all ages. All supplies will be provided. Participants can exhibit completed works for the exhibition, which will open during National Mental Health Awareness Month. The exhibit and reception are scheduled for Saturday, May 27, at 3:00 p.m. at Tamarac Community Center. Tamarac Community Center is located at 8601 W. Commercial Blvd., Tamarac. Please join us for our annual Memorial Day Ceremony on Monday, May 29, at the Tamarac Community Center at 10:30 a.m. as we commemorate the lives of our brave service members. We’ll be joined by local veterans and guest speakers as we pay tribute to the countless individuals who sacrificed their lives for our nation.

Interested in learning some new skills? The City of Tamarac has partnered with Broward College to promote skills training and credentialing opportunities in local growth industries and occupations. Camp Tamarac is accepting applications for Summer 2023 for kids ages 5-11. The camp runs from June 20th through August 4th at the Tamarac Recreation Center. Local Reminders

State Representative Lisa Dunkley will hold a post-session town hall meeting on Tuesday, May 11, at 6:30 p.m. at the Tamarac Community Center. This is an excellent opportunity to learn about the 2023 legislative session and the local policies that may impact you. For more information, email HD097@myfloridahouse.gov.

Food distributions continue every Saturday from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m., or while supplies last, at the Korean United Methodist Church, 6501 W. Commercial Blvd.

Get local fresh produce, delicious bites, pet treats, artisanal goodies, and more at the Tamarac Community Farmer’s Market. It’s currently being held at Tamarac Park, 7501 N. University Dr., from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. every Sunday.

The City of Tamarac is hosting a Circle of Support group every Monday, 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the Tamarac Community Center. Don’t miss Food Truck Fridays every last Friday of the month between 5:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. at the Tamarac Community Center, 8601 W. Commercial Blvd. Stop by with the family and choose from various delicious food vendors. There’ll be lots of fun, music, and games for everyone to enjoy!

The Tamarac Pet Pantry has donations available for pet families in need! The Pantry is located at the Tamarac Recreation Center, 7501 N. University Dr., and is open by appointment on the 2nd and 4th Tuesday and Thursday of each month. The first appointment is at 1 p.m., and the last is at 6 p.m. We accept new and unopened food products for dogs and cats if the food isn’t expired.
