Dear Neighbors,
I know this is an unsettling time for everyone. The month of March felt like a roller coaster.
It is difficult to comprehend what the total impact of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) will be at this time, but I am certain we will get through this together!
During the past few weeks, I have seen incredible acts of kindness and resiliency. As Plato said, “Necessity is the mother of invention.” As such, more than 250,000 students in the Broward County Public School system have transitioned from the traditional brick-and-mortar schools to virtual learning to show that “learning never closes.” Administrators, principals, and teachers reconstructed our entire school system overnight, and their tireless work to make this transition does not go unnoticed.
Employees in the service industry wake up every day to make sure that our essential needs of food, water, electricity, and gas are readily available, and our hospitals and essential offices are cleaned thoroughly and continuously. Delivery drivers make sure those crucial supplies make it to the stores or onto our doorsteps. IT professionals are answering the calls of their employers and employees, as there is an unprecedented amount of our workforce working remotely. Highly trained doctors, nurses, and first responders are working grueling hours on the frontline to care for the sick, and lab technicians are processing all the tests. And we can’t forget our military is always keeping us safe.
I am sure there are thousands of other unsung heroes inadvertently left out, but their contributions are still very important and appreciated! Thank you all for your continued hard work and dedication.
Our country has a long history of families and friends, pulling together when times get hard. If anything, COVID-19 has shown me that our spirit of survival is not gone but fully alive. While we are all safer at home, please know we are not locked in. You can go for a walk, run, bike ride, or sit outside and read a book (following CDC guidelines). How about making a scheduled time or times in your community to open your front door and step outside for a little while? Wave to a neighbor and make sure they’re doing ok.
