Mayor Michelle J. Gomez

From: Mayor Michelle J. Gomez

Welcome to July, a month of barbeques, summer fun, fireworks, and one of my favorite holidays, Independence Day! Thank you to all our Veterans, Active Military and Service Personnel, First Responders, and their families!

This Independence Day, the City of Tamarac has two wonderful events for the family to enjoy! The first is a Patriotic Splash Swim Party from noon to 4:00 p.m. at the Caporella Aquatic Complex, 9300 NW 58th Street. Come cool off by the pool and enjoy an afternoon of swimming, music, kid’s crafts, and more. Admission is $5 per person.

Later that day, from 6:00 to 9:30 p.m., is our annual All-American Celebration in honor of Independence Day at the Tamarac Sports Complex, 9901 NW 77 Street. The evening will feature a live performance by The Cachet Band, food trucks, inflatables, face painting, arts & crafts, and a beautiful firework display at 9:00 p.m. sharp. Bring your lawn chairs or favorite picnic blanket and be sure to get there early as parking is limited! For more information, please call (954) 597-3620.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for Zumba at last month’s Move with the Mayor event. We had so much fun moving and grooving together! The next class is indoor Jazzercise taught by Warren on Friday, July 8, at the Tamarac Community Center Gymnasium, 8601 W. Commercial Blvd. You won’t want to miss this great workout, hope to see you there!

I’m excited to team up with Lauderhill Mayor Ken Thurston for a special Move with the Mayor for a friendly competition to see how many of our residents will attend Soca Step Aerobics on Friday, July 15 at Lauderhill’s Sports Park, 7500 W. Oakland Park Boulevard. Coach Kamal from Tailored Fitness will lead the class as we dance the evening away. I hope you’ll stop by to show off our Tamarac moves in Lauderhill.

Ever wished for Christmas in July? If so, you’re in luck this month! Join us on Saturday, July 16, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. for our Summer Splash with Santa as he stops by the Caporella Aquatic Center for an epic pool party. There’ll be tons of fun, games, crafts, and more, so mark your calendars! Admission is $5 per person. For more information, call (954) 597-3660.

The Caribbean Family Fun Day is rescheduled for Saturday, July 30, from noon to 2:00 p.m. at Water’s Edge Park, 7508 NW 61st Street. This event is perfect for the entire family and will have lots of music, food, and fun for the whole family.

Broward College is offering residents the chance to get their G.E.D. for free while they pursue workforce training through their Broward UP program. They’re offering various fast-track programs like office support, warehouse operations, and networking support specialist. I’m excited to share that Tamarac University is back! This 8-week immersive program is designed to give residents a first-hand look into how our City functions. Citizens will meet local government officials, department directors, and other City staff and learn about their role in public service and local government. This is perfect for civic-minded individuals hoping to volunteer, run for office in the future, or discover the inner workings of their hometown. If you were part of the 2020 Tamarac University class that was canceled due to the pandemic, please reapply! For the class schedule and online application, please visit https://www.tamarac.org/593/Tamarac-University. Applications are due by 5:00 p.m. Friday, July 22.

On Saturday, July 30, at 10 a.m., the City will host a backpack and school supplies distribution at the Tamarac Community Center, 8601 W. Commercial Blvd. The event is open to Tamarac residents. Those interested must pre-register by visiting www.Tamarac.org/573 and download the required documents. The registration deadline is July 26.

Calling all bands! If you’d like to perform with your band at Tamarac’s Rock N’ Ride on Saturday, August 20 please visit www.Tamarac.me/RNRbands to submit your application for the Battle of the Bands by August 7! The event takes place on Saturday, August 20, from 4 – 8 p.m. at the Tamarac Sports Complex, 9901 NW 77th St., and includes a car show, live music, bounce houses, and more!

Local Reminders

  1. I’m pleased to announce a line item in the budget to repair the drainage on NW 77th Street and add curbing to the area by the Sports Complex lined with the bright orange cones! Since this project needs to be approved in the final budget by the end of September, the actual project will not be implemented until 2023. In the interim, the City is looking into a more aesthetically pleasing temporary barrier.
  2. Amendments to the City of Tamarac Charter will be on the November 2023 ballot. Your Commission can only educate residents regarding the Amendments, not advocate. The City will provide information to help answer any questions before going to the polls.
  3. Please be courteous this Independence Day. Lighting fireworks are only legally allowed on July 4, December 31, and January 1. Using firecrackers or fireworks on Independence Day can be dangerous. Be considerate of Combat Veterans, neighbors suffering from medical conditions, pets, and wildlife.
  4. Food distributions continue every Saturday from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m., or while supplies last, at the Korean United Methodist Church (6501 West Commercial Boulevard).
  5. Seventh-day Adventist Church will host a food distribution on Tuesday, July 19, between noon and 4:00 p.m., or while supplies last, at 545E Campus Circle, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33312.
  6. Friendly reminder that the Veterans Park parking lot is currently under construction. In the meantime, the Tamarac’s Farmer’s Market will be held every Sunday between 9:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. at Tamarac Park, 7501 N University Drive.

Happy Canada Day, Independence Day USA, Eid al-Adha, and Korean War Veterans Day!

Warm regards,

🎗️ Michelle
