Tamarac Mayor Michelle J. Gomez {City of Tamarac}
Tamarac Mayor Michelle Gomez has been automatically elected to another term after qualifying without opposition for the city’s 2026 municipal election, records show.
Under Florida election law, candidates who qualify without opposition are elected automatically and do not appear on ballots for voters in the general election.
While the mayor’s race is over, voters in two Tamarac commission districts will decide contested races this November.
In District 4, incumbent Commissioner Kicia Daniel and challenger Carol Mendelson qualified to run for the commission seat. In District 2, incumbent Commissioner Morey Wright Jr. and his challenger, former Tamarac Commissioner Mike Gelin, qualified for the ballot.
The city is divided into four commission districts, each represented by a commissioner who must live in the district. The mayor is elected citywide.
Gelin’s candidacy marks a bid to return to City Hall after previously serving as Tamarac’s District 2 commissioner from 2018 to 2022, when he became one of the city’s most recognizable and polarizing elected officials.
Gelin had faced a misdemeanor battery case stemming from an October 2024 altercation with Tamarac Commissioner Elvin Villalobos outside the Tamarac Library during early voting. Prosecutors initially charged Gelin with one count of simple battery for allegedly intentionally touching or striking Villalobos as Villalobos filmed him, but in March 2026 decided not to move forward with the case, court records show.
The battery case ended with a nolle prosequi filing by prosecutors, which typically means a criminal charge stays on one’s record but can later qualify for expungement.
Gelin was also arrested by BSO in 2015 while recording deputies during an incident in Tamarac. He was charged with resisting or obstructing an officer without violence, but prosecutors later dropped the case after Gelin’s recording contradicted key claims in the arrest report.
Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2026.
