Every six years, The City of Tamarac assembles a small group of residents to examine the charter.
As the most important legal document of any city, the charter is not only the city’s foundation; it outlines the organizations, powers, functions, and essential procedures. This year, the charter review board meets again to make recommendations, but ultimately, voter approval is necessary for charter changes to take effect.
Five members sit on the board. One member is appointed by the mayor and can live anywhere in the city, and each of the four members who are appointed by each commissioner must live in that district.
The board’s job is to decide whether any amendments are needed to the current city charter. Once the board proposes an amendment, a public hearing about the proposed changes will be established for public input. Any recommended or proposed changes are then presented to the city commission for authorization. Upon approval, a referendum is held where an amendment is given to the electorate for final adoption.
Tamarac will be accepting applications for the charter review board until 5 p.m. on Friday, March 5, 2021. Applications are found at tamarac.org/147/Boards-Committees, or interested parties can contact the City Clerk’s Office at cityclerk@tamarac.org.
