Tamarac Residents Run for Open Judicial Seats in August

Ilene Lieberman and her grandchildren Niki and Justin

What are the odds that the City of Tamarac has two women who are running for open seats on the judicial bench?

Both Ilene Lieberman and Julie Shapiro-Harris call Tamarac their homes and luckily, these women aren’t running for the same judicial seat.  Lieberman is a candidate for County Court and Shapiro-Harris is a candidate for Circuit Court. Both elections will be held on August 14th.

 Ilene Lieberman

Running for Broward County Court Judge, Seat 6, residents may already be familiar with Ilene Lieberman’s name.  She’s currently the Broward County Commissioner for District One, and has held her seat since 1996 during which she has served as both Vice-Mayor and Mayor of Broward County. Before that, she served as Mayor of Lauderhill for eight years.

Lieberman is a not only a longtime resident, but she is a friend to her community here in Tamarac, and is always accessible to her neighbors. Whenever residents need help, Lieberman is always there to take their calls or their emails.   She always has a rule about answering her emails promptly and knows how to “cut to the chase” and find the right person in Broward County government to solve the problem.  Many residents agree her memory is like a walking rolodex of information that goes back years.

Residents can always find Lieberman attending the neighborhood children’s parties, where she always shows up and brings candy. Although the Mayor  and Commissioner also reside there, it is Lieberman who shows up at the Halloween and Holiday Parties, as well as Egg Hunts to meet the parents and say hello.

Julie Shapiro-Harris

Julie Shapiro-Harris is running for Broward County Circuit Court, Seat 19, and currently works as a staff attorney for the Broward County Clerk of Court Domestic Violence Unit where she is part of a division that seeks to protect victims of domestic violence.   She was profiled by Tamarac Talk last December when she announced  she would be running for Circuit Court Judge seat 19.

Born in Miami Beach, Florida, Shapiro-Harris has been living in Tamarac for the past 10 years.  Besides her busy work schedule, she volunteers for the Tamarac Kiwanis, works on crossword puzzles and watches crime shows.
