Jimmy Nixon Jr and Jimmy Nixon Sr wait for over three hours to vote for President Obama on Sunday at the Tamarac Branch Library
Voters turned out in large numbers to cast their ballots on the second day of early voting at the Tamarac Branch Library on Sunday.
Approximately 28,330 people came out to vote in all 17 locations in Broward County during the first day of early voting, according to the Supervisor of Elections. Out of that, Tamarac accounted for 1,093 voters.
Hoping to avoid long lines, many people arrived at the Library around 6:45 am and ended up waiting over three hours.
With a captive audience, candidates and volunteers discussed issues while handing out literature to voters while they were in line. A few voters brought lounge chairs to sit in. Many were listening to music or browsing the web on their phones. A few people even brought books to read.
To many it was a do-or-die civic duty to vote early. Many were passionate about their choices and were not turning back.
Tamarac resident Thomas Husted who just moved from Michigan had been waiting in line for an hour and a half, and was not turning back when Tamarac Talk spoke with him. Husted was determined to vote although he was facing a long line ahead of him.
“Why wouldn’t you feel passionate (about voting)? It’s the election of our President.”
Father and son, Jimmy Nixon Sr and his son Jimmy Nixon Jr, from Lauderhill, were sharing their second opportunity to vote together. They waited in long lines to vote for Obama in 2008 and were waiting to vote for him again this year.
“I’ll wait until tomorrow if I have to.” Said Nixon Jr.
Nixon Sr said, “I’ll wait for ten years.”
