A mail carrier accused of pepper-spraying three small dogs in a Lauderhill neighborhood last month has been arrested and charged with multiple counts of animal cruelty, authorities said.
According to a Lauderhill Police Department arrest report, Sian Andre Spence, 47, of Fort Lauderdale, was taken into custody on January 28 after detectives identified him as the mail carrier seen in video footage spraying the animals during a mail delivery earlier this month
According to arrest records, the incident occurred on January 2 at a home near Northwest 51st Avenue.
A video aired by Local 10 News shows three Shih Tzu-poodles – a mother named Ginger and her two puppies, DJ and Junior – barking from behind a metal fence in their front yard when the mail carrier sprayed them with pepper spray.
Police say the dog’s owner told them she was inside the home when the incident happened and later reviewed video footage showing the mail carrier spraying the dogs multiple times. The dogs, each weighing between five and ten pounds, were observed rubbing their faces on the ground and pawing at their eyes after exposure.
According to the video, the dogs never left the yard and remained separated from the mail carrier by the fence as he walked along the sidewalk.
Police contacted Spence at his home, where he acknowledged that he was the individual shown in the video footage.
Spence was arrested and taken to the Broward County Main Jail. When approached by Local 10 reporters after his release, he declined to comment, saying his attorneys would handle any statements.
