Woodmont Country Club in Tamarac is a beautiful development with 33 communities tied together with an 18-hole golf course.
Built on what was once known as Fort Lauderdale Truck Farms according to old survey documents, the Tamarac Historical Society said that the club was once known as “Timber Run,” a name that was perhaps given to it due to its wooden exterior, however, it would be the exterior that would help seal its fate. After celebrating its first New Year’s Eve celebration in 1977 with great food, and lively music, a fire started that would destroyed the entire clubhouse in a very short time due to the that wood. Fortunately, the guests had left for the evening.
A man named Simon Zunamon executed a covenant in 1975 which limited the lands to be only used for a golf course and country club and with it included a pro shop, locker rooms, swimming pools, cabanas, dining facilities, parking, tennis courts, putting greens, golf driving ranges and all other incidental uses until the year 2074. The covenant was designed to benefit all of the property owners, but would be broken when the City Commission would vote to move forward to turning the Pines golf 27-hole golf course into 152 single-family homes 28,000 square feet of commercial space in 2014.
According to the Sun Sentinel, the plans include construction of a new club house, a new fitness area, pool, restaurant and an outdoor dining area and was to be completed before the season in 2015. Construction of the homes isn’t expected to begin until after a year.
The clubhouse will be demolished after construction of a new one, which will be between 12,000 to 14,000 square feet, once completed. The construction of homes will be in stages, with potential home buyers having a choice of five single and two-story home models from which to choose.
