Tamarac Mayor Michelle J. Gomez has endorsed Dr. Sharry Kimmel in the race for the Broward County School Board District 4 seat, according to a statement from her campaign.
Kimmel, a professor of teacher education at Broward College and a 30-year educator, is running for the open District 4 seat. The campaign said Gomez joins incumbent School Board Member Lori Alhadeff and several elected officials and community leaders in supporting Kimmel’s candidacy.
“Our community needs a School Board member who understands the complexities of the classroom and the bottom line of a budget,” Gomez said in a statement. “Dr. Sharry Kimmel is that leader. From being Broward County Teacher of the Year to training our next generation of teachers, she has the unparalleled expertise we need to fight for student safety and fiscal transparency.”
Kimmel welcomed the endorsement, saying collaboration between local governments and schools is essential.
“I am honored to have the support of Mayor Gomez,” Kimmel said. “She understands that strong schools are the foundation of successful communities. I look forward to working with her to ensure every family in Tamarac and District 4 has access to a world-class education system.”
Kimmel announced her campaign last month alongside School Board member Lori Alhadeff, who formally endorsed Kimmel as her replacement.
District 4 includes Tamarac, Coral Springs, Parkland, Coconut Creek, and parts of Margate. The Broward County School Board oversees Broward County Public Schools, one of the nation’s largest public school districts.
