A Broward Sheriff’s Office deputy, once celebrated as a hero for saving a child’s life, was arrested for stealing children’s toys.
In 2015, Guzman was honored by the City of Tamarac for saving a one year-old toddler was choking.
The incident happened on August 27, 2015., when Guzman was called to the Inn Town Suites for a reported choking. Upon his arrival, the mother Laquisha Davis, 24, reported that her son, one year-old Cartier Williams, who had eaten a handful of fruit snacks had stopped breathing and began to seize. Davis said that she began CPR and was able to get a piece out, but Cartier became unresponsive.
Guzman turned him over and observed him take a partial breath, cough, then cry for a second and began to pass out again. He continued with the back blows all the way down the stairs and out into the parking lot. As he stepped into the parking lot, two more pieces of fruit snack came out of his mouth as he began to cough and cry.
The city awarded him a proclamation for his heroic efforts.
BSO public corruption unit detectives arrested Deputy Henry Guzman at approximately 11 a.m. Monday when he reported to Internal Affairs at the Public Safety Building. The 13-year veteran was suspended with pay and transported to the Main Jail. He is expected to be suspended without pay after the State Attorney’s Office formally files the charges.
Sheriff Scott Israel said, ”Absolutely no one is above the law. His actions are disgraceful, and in no way are a reflection of the good, hardworking men and women of the Broward Sheriff’s Office. I commend the work of the Public Corruption Unit for its commitment to hold deputies accountable for any criminal activity.”
