ICE has placed a detainer status on a Tamarac man who is facing multiple felony charges after authorities say he fraudulently deposited nearly $9,000 using doctored checks belonging to his employer, a local cleaning company.
According to a Broward County Sheriff’s Office arrest report, Obeimar Garcia, 59, was arrested on July 8 at the Arcadia office complex located at 8601 West McNab Road, where he was working as a contracted cleaner for AA Cleaning Master.
The report shows that the business owner alerted authorities after noticing three unauthorized mobile check deposits totaling $8,660.06 made to Garcia’s Chase Bank account.
According to an arrest affidavit, the victim provided copies of the fraudulent checks along with the original check she had issued to Garcia back on January 2. Investigators noted that the fake checks closely resembled the legitimate ones but contained altered amounts, dates, and formatting, including typewritten entries where the original had been handwritten.
Upon interview with authorities, Garcia confirmed receiving a check from the company on January 2 but later changed his story, denying ever receiving the check or knowing how the altered versions were created. He later blamed unidentified friends from Chicago for the fraudulent transactions, claiming they deposited funds into his account for a real estate purchase in Colombia.
Investigators noted inconsistencies in his stories and confirmed that the fraudulent checks matched numbers from the victim’s unused check stock.
Garcia was arrested and transported to the Broward Main Jail and remains held without bond. Due to Garcia’s citizenship status, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) was notified. ICE would later confirm that a detainer had been placed on him.
