A man was critically injured late Saturday night in Tamarac after being struck and left in the roadway by an unidentified hit-and-run driver, who investigators were still searching for Wednesday, authorities said.
According to Broward Sheriff’s Office Traffic Homicide Unit detectives, the crash happened around 11:56 p.m. near the 5000 block of North State Road 7. Investigators said the male pedestrian was crossing the southbound lanes of North State Road 7 mid-block, just north of Commercial Boulevard, when the driver of a silver Toyota Camry traveling south in the left thru-lane sideswiped him. The impact sent the pedestrian crashing onto the pavement, where he remained between the left and center thru lanes.
As the man lay in the roadway, an unknown black sedan drove over him and continued southbound, authorities said. Other drivers then noticed the victim and stopped.
Video obtained by detectives shows the Toyota’s driver pulling into a nearby Shell gas station and getting out of their car. The driver, described as possibly an adult male wearing dark Bermuda shorts and a light sleeveless shirt, walked back toward where the pedestrian had fallen and remained on the sidewalk as good Samaritans tried to help the injured man, detectives said.
Moments later, the driver returned to the Toyota and fled southbound on North State Road 7, according to BSO.
Tamarac Fire Rescue rushed the pedestrian to a local hospital in critical condition. His condition was not immediately available Wednesday, and his name was not made public by authorities.
Investigators said the hit-and-run vehicle is a 2002–2006 silver Toyota Camry, possibly with minor damage to the front bumper on the driver’s side and missing the passenger-side front hubcap.
