The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating a shooting by Broward Sheriff’s Office deputies in Tamarac that left a man wounded, BSO said Tuesday.
The non-fatal shooting happened Sunday, Nov. 30, after BSO Tamarac District deputies responded to a report of a male actively firing a gun inside a residence near the 7800 block of Northwest 74th Avenue shortly after 9 p.m., according to BSO.
When deputies arrived at the scene, they said they heard multiple gunshots and saw David Pagan, 35, of Tamarac, standing in the middle of the roadway armed with a gun.
According to investigators, deputies made multiple commands for Pagan to drop his gun. At some point, detectives said, Pagan raised or pointed the firearm at the deputies.
“Fearing for their lives and the lives of others, two BSO deputies discharged their weapons,” BSO said in a written announcement Tuesday.
Following the deputy-involved shooting, Pagan fell to the ground.
According to BSO, deputies found two guns next to him.
Tamarac Fire Rescue responded and rushed Pagan to Broward Health North, where he was receiving treatment Tuesday, authorities said. His condition was not immediately available.
FDLE is investigating the circumstances of the shooting.
Separately, BSO’s Homicide and Crime Scene units are investigating the circumstances that led to the shooting, and BSO’s Internal Affairs Unit is conducting an administrative review of the incident, according to BSO.
As per BSO policy, the two deputies who fired their weapons were placed on administrative assignment pending further investigation.
Pagan faces seven counts of aggravated assault with a firearm and one count of discharging a firearm in an occupied dwelling, authorities said.
