A nine-year-old boy was shot in his ankle in Lauderhill Monday morning, police said.
The Memorial Day violence broke out around 10:45 a.m. near 1531 North State Road 7, where police were called in response to the shooting.
Investigators learned there had been an altercation in a parking lot, which led to someone firing a gun, Lauderhill Police Lt. Antonio Gonzalez said in a press release.
Officers at the scene found the nine-year-old child boy suffering from a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to his right ankle, an injury caused by a bullet fired during the altercation, police said.
Police determined that the boy and his family were not involved in the initial altercation, Gonzalez said.
The boy was treated at Broward Health Medical Center in Fort Lauderdale.
Detectives determined that three vehicles were involved in the altercation leading up to the shooting: a white Toyota, a white Chevrolet SUV, and a black Chevrolet SUV, Gonzalez said.
The female driver of the black Chevrolet SUV returned to the scene after the shooting and was cooperating with detectives Monday afternoon, according to police.
Police did not say what led to the altercation. No arrests have been announced in the case.
