The Tamarac Planning Board on Wednesday unanimously approved a new residential development that would transform a 4.3-acre parcel that was once part of the Woodmont golf course into a 50-unit townhome community.
Developer D.R. Horton’s proposed project, located at the corner of North Pine Island Road and Southgate Boulevard, would feature eight two-story townhouse buildings with a mix of three and four-bedroom units. The development would include amenities such as a children’s play area and a community pool.
The project must still win the approval of the city commission to move forward.
Initially designated for commercial use, the parcel was rezoned to residential by the city commission in January, paving the way for approval of the new townhome development. Woodmont Country Club, Inc. owns the land, officials said.
The project is expected to generate less traffic than the previously planned commercial space and will provide a new housing option for Tamarac residents, according to the city.
The site plan features 413 trees and 1,670 shrubs, with a landscaped buffer zone separating the new development from existing residential areas. Each townhome will have garage parking and additional parking spaces, totaling 125 parking spots.
While the units are not designated as affordable housing, they are expected to offer a more accessible housing option compared to single-family homes in the area, officials said.
