Tamarac Collects Donations for Colombia Earthquake Relief

Commission Agrees to Changes in Electronic Signs for Businesses

Tamarac officials are asking residents to help communities devastated by a powerful 7.4-magnitude earthquake in Colombia.

The earthquake affected 12 departments and 335 municipalities, with Chocó, Valle del Cauca, Risaralda and Caldas among the hardest-hit areas.

Thousands of residents have reportedly been left without homes, water or electricity.

Tamarac Mayor Michelle J. Gómez and the Tamarac City Commission are collecting relief supplies through Thursday, Sept. 17.

Collection boxes are available from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Tamarac Community Center, Tamarac Park and Tamarac City Hall.

Requested donations include baby formula, diapers, work gloves, industrial sponges, first-aid kits, pet food and pet supplies. Organizers are also accepting canned and nonperishable food, water, flashlights, batteries, generators, solar-powered lights, tarps, tents and sleeping bags.

Personal care items such as shampoo, soap, deodorant, toothpaste, hairbrushes and washcloths are also needed.

Organizers ask donors not to contribute clothing, shoes, used hygiene products or opened food.

Monetary donations can also be made through Food For The Poor’s Colombia earthquake relief campaign.
