A Broward County teacher has been charged in federal court with exploiting children as young as 5 years old by allegedly using online games and messaging platforms to obtain child sexual abuse material.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Florida, Evan Michael Sands, 26, of Tamarac, was arraigned Friday and ordered held without bond pending trial.

Federal prosecutors allege Sands used online communications to contact minors and persuaded them to send child sexual abuse material (CSAM) in exchange for in-game currency tied to a popular children’s video game. Investigators also allege Sands produced and transmitted sexually explicit videos of himself and distributed CSAM to others through an online communication platform.

Sands has been charged with enticement of a minor to engage in illicit sexual activity, along with possession and distribution of child pornography.

If convicted, he faces up to life in federal prison on the enticement charge and up to 20 years in prison on each possession and distribution charge.

The announcement was made by U.S. Attorney Jason A. Reding Quiñones for the Southern District of Florida, Acting Special Agent in Charge Jose R. Figueroa of Homeland Security Investigations Miami, and Broward Sheriff Gregory Tony.

The investigation is being conducted by Homeland Security Investigations Fort Lauderdale and the Broward Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities are asking anyone who believes they may have been a victim or who has information related to the investigation to contact BSO Detective Robert Rausch at 954-888-1570. Information regarding child sexual exploitation can also be reported to the HSI Tip Line at 1-866-347-2423.

Federal prosecutors have not publicly identified the school or educational institution where Sands was employed.
