Upper-level high school students are about to get a front-row seat in the legislative process thanks to newly elected U.S. Rep Jared Moskowitz’s Congressional Youth Cabinet (CYC).
The CYC is a nonpartisan initiative that will expose students to the importance of youth advocacy in America, the legislative process, and how citizens can serve as effective agents for positive change.
“I think it’s important that we are actively encouraging youth engagement in all levels of government,” Moskowitz said. “Sometimes, it takes a new perspective to address old problems.”
Members of the Cabinet have the opportunity to share their own ideas about solving pressing issues facing young Americans with Moskowitz.
“As a Congressman, I want input from everyone who has a stake in the issues confronting our community, and that includes young Floridians,” said Moskowitz, who was sworn into office in January.
The CYC also allows students to connect with other elected officials, peers, and community leaders. Through this partnership with Moskowitz, young Floridians will gain a solid understanding of how they can make a positive difference in their communities and their country.
Applicants must be a junior or senior in 2023-2024 and live or attend school in Congressional District 23, which includes Dania Beach, Davie, Deerfield Beach, Lauderhill, Lauderdale Lakes, Margate, North Lauderdale, Palm Springs, Parkland, Plantation, Pompano Beach, Sunrise, Tamarac, West Park, Wilton Manors, and portions of Miami Gardens, Weston, Fort Lauderdale, and Hollywood.
Students must include an essay, resume, and letter of recommendation by April 28.
A 500 maximum-word essay is: “Why you would like to serve on Moskowitz’s Congressional Youth Cabinet and how would your unique experiences help to contribute to the Congressional Youth Cabinet.”
Students selected to represent their school will serve one term on the Cabinet and are expected to attend four meetings during the 2023-2024 academic year. Meeting dates, times, and locations will be provided after students are selected.
