Authorities on Tuesday identified a six-year-old boy who accidentally shot himself in Tamarac.
According to a preliminary investigation, Odaine Hall was being watched by his uncle when the child “obtained an unsecured firearm and accidentally shot himself” shortly before 3:30 p.m. Monday in a residence near the 5600 block of Rock Island Road, the Broward Sheriff’s Office said in a press release.
When Tamarac deputies and Tamarac Fire Rescue personnel arrived, they found Hall suffering from a single gunshot wound. He died at the scene, authorities said.
Detectives with BSO’s Homicide Unit are investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
Additional details about the incident were not made public.
BSO officials on Tuesday implored gun owners to properly secure their firearms and practice gun safety.
“A firearm should always be unloaded and stored in a locked storage container that isn’t easily accessible to minors,” the agency said in its press release. “Doing so protects children and adults by preventing unintentional shootings and incidents like this one.”
