Tamarac city officials said a 6-year-old child died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound in the city Monday afternoon.
In an email to the city’s manager’s office, Tamarac spokesperson Joanna Johnson said the Broward Sheriff’s Office and Tamarac Fire Rescue had responded to the scene of the “tragic” shooting in the 5600 block of Rock Island Road.
According to BSO, deputies responded to reports of a shooting in the area shortly before 3:30 p.m. and found the child had been shot.
The child was pronounced dead at the scene, according to a BSO press release.
The release did not specify whether the child had suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Detectives with BSO’s Crime Scene and Homicide Units were responding to the scene to investigate the shooting.
In a post on X Monday, U.S. Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick identified the dead child as a male and said she was “heartbroken for the family experiencing the loss of their little boy.”
“Too many lives have been lost because of a lack of gun safety in our communities,” wrote the congresswoman, who represents Tamarac. “Yet another life cut short too soon. My heart goes out to those affected.”
Additional information about the shooting was not immediately made public.
