A Tamarac woman became the victim of a terrifying crime Sunday morning when a bullet ripped through her bedroom window, missed her by a few feet, and cut through three walls of her condominium, Tamarac Talk has learned.
Caryn Filkoff, 69, was in bed between 6 a.m. and 6:30 a.m. inside her Concord Village condo, 8150 W. McNab Rd., when “my sleep was pierced by the rapid-fire sounds of gunshots,” she told Tamarac Talk Monday.
It’s not clear where the shots came from, but just before 6:30 a.m. Sunday, the Broward regional communications center received multiple calls about shots fired near the 7900 block of Lagos De Campo Boulevard in Tamarac, a fifth of a mile from Filkoff’s condo overlooking a golf course, according to the Broward Sheriff’s Office.
Tamarac District deputies responded to Lagos De Campo Boulevard and canvassed the area. No injuries were reported, and no arrests were made. Ninety minutes later, deputies were notified of the bullet found in Filkoff’s home, according to BSO.
The crime, Filkoff said, represents a “serious public safety issue” that turned her beloved condo into a crime scene.
“This is what I heard: A bullet, glass breaking, the sound of the bullet going through three walls and hitting the refrigerator,” said Filkoff, who later found a piece of the fragmented slug.
“My instant reaction to these unexpected noises was to grab my dog and get back into bed. When I finally got up, around 7:30, I was perplexed to find broken glass in the hallway. Then I saw the broken picture but I didn’t know why it was broken. When I swept up the glass, I saw the piece of bullet, and called [BSO].”
She said deputies later took photographs of the bullet holes caused by a speeding projectile that “went through my walls like butter.”
“If I had gotten out of bed, was in my closet or standing at the refrigerator, the bullet could have hit me,” Filkoff said.
She remembers being in disbelief about the prospect a bullet had just torn through her window and sped through her bedroom while she slept.
“I thought, ‘Was that a bullet? Nah, that wasn’t a bullet,’” Filkoff recalled. “So I went back to sleep.”
Now, she wants to know “how this [gunfire issue] will be stopped.”
Detectives with BSO’s Violent Crimes Unit “are investigating the circumstances surrounding the shots fired,” BSO Public Information Officer Gerdy St. Louis said Monday.
No additional information about BSO’s investigation was immediately made public.
