Broward Sheriff’s Office detectives released a statement on September 25 that they had apprehended a 17-year-old suspect believed to be responsible for a string of car burglaries and illegal use of credit cards in the North Lauderdale area.
The arrest comes after several vehicle break-ins that have plagued a local YouFit fitness facility since August 9, resulting in victims losing various items and cash.
Since the incidents began, the BSO North Lauderdale District authorities have been investigating the spree of car burglaries at the YouFit parking lot at 7346 McNab Road. Over the past several weeks, at least ten vehicles had been broken into, with no suspect arrested.
According to the BSO office, the suspect was breaking into parked cars, making off with purses, wallets, credit cards, electronics, and other personal items belonging to gym-goers who were inside the facility working out.
In one case, investigators noted that a victim received notifications from his credit card company shortly after the burglary. The reports revealed unauthorized charges for gift cards at a local Walmart store, providing a significant lead in the ongoing investigation.
On the evening of Monday, September 25, members of the BSO Burglary Apprehension Team were finally able to close in on the teenage suspect, and an arrest occurred at 2500 Southwest 22nd Terrace.
The suspect was taken into custody on 13 counts related to illegal use of credit cards and five counts of burglary conveyance. The underaged thief also faces a charge of resisting arrest.
While the arrest marks a significant breakthrough in the case, investigators continue to probe similar crimes in South Florida, as they suspect the teenager may be connected to other unsolved incidents.
Following his apprehension, the juvenile was transported to the Juvenile Assessment Center for processing, where they will be held pending future court dates.
