A new board promoting appreciation, acceptance, and respect for cultural differences passed unanimously during the first reading at Wednesday’s commission meeting.
Called the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Board, Parks and Recreation Director Greg Warner presented the ordinance creating it, crediting commissioners Marlon Bolton and Mike Gelin as the driving forces.
The board will consist of five members, including residents, business owners, or city employees, all appointed by the city commission, and the appointees would select a chairperson.
Their job is to make recommendations to the commission on diversity and equity strategies and strengthen connections among the diverse community groups and the city government.
“This is something that we have discussed through strategic planning and something we all desire to have,” said Mayor Michelle Gomez.
The ordinance to create the board will be brought back for a second reading on January 27.
