By Broward County Commissioner Michael Udine
April is going to be exciting in so many ways for Broward County. We are moving forward into the future with major infrastructure and service improvements at our port, airport, and parks. Plus, as our snowbirds start to depart for points north, things are heating up on the ice for our own Florida Panthers as they start their pursuit of the Stanley Cup this month! Let’s all cheer them on and bring the cup home to South Florida!
Port Everglades will commission three new Super Post-Panamax Gantry Cranes in April! These cranes will provide superior service to cargo vessels as they make port calls at our powerhouse port. This means quicker turnaround times for vessels, more cargo received and exported, and the latest and greatest technology available to our dock workers and longshoremen, who make it all possible every day. This is not only a win for Broward County but for the region as it will enhance our capabilities and provide a large economic impact, both direct and indirect.
The Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport is also making moves to add to your many travel options. In April, I attended an event to commemorate the new El Al Airline’s service to Tel Aviv, Israel. This new service is vital to many in our community who have family and friends located in Israel and will serve as another way that our county and the State of Israel are linked. The twice-a-week service will commence this month, and we look forward to a strong partnership.
The World Cup is coming to the Central Broward Regional Park. No, not the soccer one with Lionel Messi (but you can catch him in Broward with Inter Miami!). I am talking about the World Cup of Cricket! In February, Broward County announced $8.4 million dollars in upgrades to the park’s stadium in the heart of Broward so that we will be ready as the world’s superstars from India, Pakistan, Canada, Ireland, the USA, and more compete at the highest level. These upgrades will provide a first-class experience for fans, media, and players. After the tournament, these upgrades will continue to support future events and create a continuous economic impact for our community. Stay tuned for when to get your tickets.
Finally, to all who celebrate, I wish you and your family a Happy Easter, Passover, and a blessed Ramadan. May you have a time filled with memories, and meaningful celebrations. No matter what you celebrate, let’s all pray for peace throughout world.
