To help students better prepare for their first day of school, Tamarac residents can now donate supplies to Operation Backpack, an initiative that helps them by giving them backpacks full of grade-specific school supplies.
“A new, full backpack can make the difference between a child being excited to go to school, and refusing to go at all,” said Elise Boston, Public Information Officer for the City of Tamarac. “It also relieves parents of an expense they simply cannot afford.”
By donating to Operation Backpack, school supplies along with the backpacks will be donated to 19 disadvantaged children from kindergarten through sixth grade living in Tamarac. Families that were interested in the program went through an income certification process through Tamarac’s social services department.
The backpacks are separated into two categories: “little backpackers” and “big kids backpacks.” In “little backpackers” grades kindergarten through second grade need supplies such as crayons, markers, glue sticks, unscented baby wipes and other items specific to their grade. “Big kids backpacks” from grades third through sixth need supplies such as calculators, pocket dictionaries, scissors and pocket folders.
Once you fill the backpack that you plan to donate, drop them off by Monday, August 7, at either the Tamarac Community Center, Tamarac City Hall, Caporella Aquatic Center or the Parks and Recreation Administration Building. The first day of school starts August 21.
