A man died after the car he was driving exited Florida’s Turnpike in Tamarac Friday morning and landed in a retention pond, where it became submerged in water, authorities said.
The man, whose name was not immediately made public because his family had not been notified, was driving a silver 2012 Hyundai Sonata south on the Turnpike exit ramp to Commercial Boulevard shortly before 5 a.m., according to Florida Highway Patrol.
As the road began to curve west, the Sonata left the road, entered a median section of the exit ramp, and collided with a standing sign, authorities said. The Sonata then traveled over an embankment and went airborne, traveling over the entrance ramp lane and landing in the nearby retention pond, according to FHP.
Troopers said their investigation into the incident is ongoing.
